»Grant Matthews :

I'm a photographer living in the picturesque Isle of Man. I shoot digitally using a Canon 350D DSLR and use Photoshop for postprocessing images. I believe in post processing as much as any traditional darkroom would have done in the past so my work mainly focuses on changing light, or saturating colours, not composites or manufactured scenes - although that's only because I haven't had the time to learn that yet.

My interest in photography started when I was a boy and I used to photograph my friends skateboarding and riding BMX using a 35mm point and shoot camera my parents had bought me. During secondary school, I inherited by Dad's Yashica FR2 SLR and began exploring B+W film. Following a course in photography, and a short stint working at a local newspaper, I was hooked and during university I kept shooting until the costs of developing film became too much for a student to afford.

The launch of digital photography, has re-awakened my old love for creating images and I started with a Canon S50 - I still use this camera today for situations where I cant take a DSLR. Although it's only a 5Mb point and shoot - it allows full creative modes and manual settings so you can easily take excellent images with it. In Aug 2005, I made the transition to a DSLR and I havent looked back. In fact, digital photography answers all the problems I had as a developing photographer in my youth - I get instant feedback and can correct any mistakes in settings+ reshoot and therefore learn where I can improve, without waiting for development of prints.

I mainly shoot natural scenes and landscapes but have a growing collection of candid and environmental portraits too. I like to document the world around me, just I case I move on in the future. Being based on the Isle of Man, I am surrounded by ever changing weather, light and landscapes so I try to capture that in my images which are often bleak, dark and moody.
